Basics

You need to take a theory test before you can apply for your practical driving test

It is a fairly simple test split into 2 parts-

  • The multiple choice questions
  • The hazard perception test

There are 50 multiple choice questions - you need to achieve 43 out of 50 to pass.

The object of the hazard perception section is to identify up to 15 hazards as quickly as possible from 14 video clips

The time allowed for both tests is 57 minutes.

The cost is currently £31.00 (April 2009)

Study and Practice

The current pass rate is about 50%

Between 70% and 80% of the multiple choice questions are based on common sense, however, you will not be able to pass on this alone and you will need to do some study. We normally recommend about 10 hours before you take your test. Yes, you can do it by cramming, but don't forget this is a life skill and can leave you very vulnerable if you don't remember the rules of the road. With over 3500 killed on our roads each year this is a serious business!

To prepare for the multiple choice part of the theory test, we strongly recommend that you study the books from which the questions are sourced as well as the questions themselves. These books are:

These books, DVDs and ON-Line Resourses will help you to answer the questions correctly and will also help you when studying for your practical test. The information in them will be relevant throughout your driving life so make sure you always have an up-to-date copy that you can refer to.
